Contrary to popular myth, the body truly needs fat. However, it must be the right kind of fat. Essential Fatty Acids (omega fats) are the basic building blocks of which fats and oils are composed. The fatty acids that are necessary for health and that cannot be made by the body are called ESSENTIAL fatty acids or EFAs. These essential fats must be supplied through the diet.
Our three basic categories of essential fatty acids are designated Omega-3, Omega-6 & Omega-9 based upon their chemical structures. Omega-3, including alpha-linolenic and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), are found in fresh deepwater fish, fish oil, and certain cold pressed vegetable oils such as canola, flaxseed oil, and walnut oil. Omega-6, which include linoleic and gamma-linoleic acids are found primarily in raw nuts, seeds, legumes, and unsaturated vegetable oils such as borage oil, grape seed oil, primrose oil, sesame oil, and soybean oil. Omega-9 or Oleic Acid can be found in cold pressed oil such as canola, and safflower. Other sources of Omega-9 are avocados, olives, almonds, cashews and macadamia nuts.
To supply EFA’s in supplemental form they must not be subjected to heat during the manufacturing process. Heat and light destroy EFAs, resulting in the creation of dangerous free radicals.
